It's Almost Over
It's really such a bittersweet feeling. I honestly could stay for 6 weeks, but the only thing holding me back from that is the fact that I miss my best friend so much. Whenever something bothers me he's literally the only person I can talk to because I don't really know how to do that sorta stuff. So it sucks not having that and I'm looking forward to coming home to all the people that matter. But at least I can say I enjoyed my time here. I've met some great people made some great friends and I wish I was more outgoing and could have made more friends. But hey it's alright and I hope to keep in touch with everyone :) This trip went by so fast I can't believe it's almost over.. wow.

Changing Education Paradigms
I found it a lot easier to remember what the narrator was saying because of the animation It made the whole thing more interesting and artistic. The topic was interesting as well. The topic of education and how it's run has actually been a conversation my best friend and I have always spoken about. Sometimes even one of our teachers would join in because he felt like the public school system was corrupt. So hearing and watching this just opened my mind to new opinions and it was very interesting to me.
A Bit About Me :)
2011 |
So a lot of people think I met Tyreece here at Summer Discovery, but really we've been friends for a little over 3 years now. We come from the same program in NYC and we're both from the Bronx. Our program offered Summer Discovery for us for free as long as we met the requirements and showed that we wanted it and Summer Discovery has been something we've been talking about since our Freshman year in the program. For many of you it may not be a big deal, but for us it was like a dream. Summer Discovery wouldn't have been possible for us if it weren't for our program and traveling wouldn't have either. Our families didn't go to college or do anything even as close to as what we're doing so for us, we're the leaders of our families and the better generation. We're the stepping stone to creating a better future for our families because it all started with us. It all started with us knowing who we are and not letting our environments define us. So if Summer Discovery has been something you could always just come back to, appreciate it because Tyreece and I will never be able to do something like this again and I guarentee you there are other kids out there who wish they could have an opportunity like this. Tyreece is a friend I made along the way and we got closer and closer through our hard work in the program and I know someday he'll be very successful and I hope I do as well. So enjoy your time here and use everything to your benefit because I know I am and I've met some pretty amazing people here and I look forward to meeting more before I leave :)

LA Weekly San Diego Fireworks Fail
http://blogs.laweekly.com/informer/2012/07/fireworks_san_diego_fail_glorietta_bay.php
What an absolute FAIL! At the San Diego's fireworks show all the fireworks went off at the same time 5 minutes before the show was suppose to start making the "show" only seconds long. If you click the link you can see 2 videos of the fireworks all going off at the same time just making it look like a huge explosion and you can hear the audiences confusion. Someone even sarcastically remarks, "That's the BEST 4th of July fireworks ever!"

How to Succeed on Youtube
http://www.laweekly.com/2012-06-28/news/la-weekly-youtube-2012/
First I love the title of this article, I'm not sure if it's just because I'm a Broadway freak or if everyone knows, but if you didn't the reference is to "How to Succeed In Business Without Even Trying," a musical based on a man who relies on this book to get him through the business world just by sucking up, making relationships, and mingling with the right people and which surprisingly ends up working. In the case of this article, it's very similar just in the way of manipulating "the system" in your favor. These people who become famous on the internet, especially on youtube do things people wouldn't normally do or are afraid to do and publish it to the public as entertainment and once a video goes viral there's no controlling who will see it next. And sometimes youtube videos become so famous they travel to television. (The Annoying Orange which will soon me a show on cartoon network, Niga Higa who has been a guest star in a couple of shows, and Fred who guest starred in iCarly and eventually came out with his on television movie.) Sometimes just by being spontaneous, adventurous, and different you can be successful. It's almost like making the right friends and sucking up to the right people, but instead you're snatching the public's eye and simply standing out from the crowd, which overall can make you a huge success.

Is Katy Perry Leaving Candyland?
http://www.opposingviews.com/i/entertainment/katy-perry-quits-her-lollipops
As you may know Katy Perry is known for her candy land themed music videos and costumes and fun upbeat tempo songs, but is that all about to change? Not too long ago Katy's 3D movie came out and as Katy promotes her work she speaks about how she came down from cloud nine and she's been smacked with reality and realizes that life isn't all gum balls and cotton candy. Is this the end from the candy land carefree Katy Perry? Or is this just a phase? What it seems from Katy's attitude that this is more than just a phase, but her new reality. Her pretty recent divorce with Russell Brand was definitely the main cause of this new perspective. So be prepared for a new Katy and click the link for her personal quotes and her new song "Wide Awake" that describes her relationship with Russell.

Q & A with Tina Watson
Description:
Name: Tina Watson
Age: 16
Whence: Great Neck, NY
Q: What's one thing about you that people would never guess from looking at you?
A: I'm allergic to peanuts.
Q: Who's your celebrity crush? And why?
A: Andrew Garfield because he’s a really good actor (and obviously very attractive and his accent is adorable). There’s also just something about the way he doesn’t act like a celebrity and is so shy, you get the feeling that he doesn’t take his position for granted and doesn’t let fame get to him
Liam Payne from One Direction because he seems like the sweetest person ever and is so grateful for the fans. Once him and the other members of One Direction were passing out snacks to the fans, and Liam gave some snacks to paparazzi - who does that? He doesn't act like he abuses his position as an international popstar and is so humble.
Q: What's your dream car? And why?
A: Chevy Camaro because my dad has one and I haven't been able to drive it yet and I really want to because it's really cool.
Q: Where do you want to go to college and what do you want to study?
A: I want to go to Columbia and I want to study Literature or Psychology.
Q: What clique do you fit into in high school?
A: The smart people because I'm a part of the school newspaper and I like to read.
Q: What movie or song sums up your life?
A:
Q: Favorite TV show and why?
A: Lost because it's so unlike reality and it's exciting.
Q: Best place you've every visited?
A: Niagra Falls because it was really cool and was my first time out of the country which just made it even more exciting.
Q: What super power would you have?
A: Reading people's minds.
Q: Describe an embarrassing moment.
A: This past Wednesday I was walking around Westwood with some people, some of which I didn't know very well, when we passed Sam's Donuts and I saw a guy sitting outside with a gray hoodie that looked exactly like Andrew Garfield. (In my defense, he looked like he could have literally been his twin). I absolutely flipped out and started shaking and yelling "Oh my god that was Andrew Garfield". Hopefully nobody could hear me except for my friends but maybe even the guy that looked like Andrew could. Everyone thought I was crazy but I was completely convinced it was him. We passed by his table about five times and I just stared right at him, and in the end it wasn't him. But the people he was with were kind of staring at me because I must have looked like a crazy person. I was just so excited! At the time the fact that they were staring convinced me even more, because if the guy was really Andrew Garfield they would have found it funny that he caused a random girl on the street to have a complete panic attack. The people I was with must have thought I was crazy as well, because I definitely was acting like it. It was all good in the end though because the very next day I saw the real Andrew Garfield..so it didn't matter that it wasn't him.

My Digital Footprint
It's pretty creepy how on the first page the majority of the links is me. Especially the twitter ones because I only made a twitter because my friend wanted more followers and he made me make one so I could follow him. I had no idea what I was doing and haven't tweeted since and it's weird seeing that people in my school that are younger than me are following me, people I've never even spoke to. It's just weird because I don't go on. I'm 17 and my twitter still says I'm 16 which just goes to show it's not something I update. I guess I left a pretty big digital footprint without being aware at all.
Twitter taking over?
http://campustechnology.com/articles/2012/04/05/using-twitter-to-support-learning.aspx
Are you a twitter freak? How would you feel about twitter not only being a socializing site, but a place where your own instructors can contact you and update you for educational purposes? Do you think this is beneficial or do you think this is just taking it a step too far? In this article you will read about some teacher's new methods to staying in contact with their students. Among these instructors is Chris Betcher, a teacher from Sydney, who talks about his opinion in the subject. Tell me what you think. Do you agree or disagree?

Sculpture Museum at UCLA
I am not really good at analyzing art, but I found this piece very interesting. It looks very Native in its style and culture and the best part is the detail. There is art within the art. As a whole this piece almost looks like a shrine, but as you get closer you can see the design on the pole and it looks as if someone has printed there hands across the pole, but not in a simple touch that was an accident, it looks intentional. Like someone placed their hand and left it there for a few moments and then let go, like they put a part of themselves on the shrine, on the art, and that's what just made it beautiful for me.

New Friends
After a fun day at Westwood I literally spent about 5 hours with these girls in my dorm 570D. We had so much fun and I feel like I've known them for so long even though I basically just met them. They are awesome and it's sad to think that at some point I won't be seeing them again. Or more Lauren (right) because she lives in Texas. Zoe I'm sure we can find time since we live in the same state she just doesn't live in the city like I do. I'm glad I've met people I can get along with and I hope to meet more, but these girls are definitely friends I'd want to create more fun and exciting memories with :)

Hey guys! This is my suitemate. Her names Tina and she also lives in NY but in Great Neck. I live in the city. I was so nervous about meeting my roommate and I'm glad I met someone I can get along with. We are actually the only 2 Americans in our suite so its pretty cool. Its nice because it turns out she was just as nervous as I was about meeting her roommate as well. I guess we got lucky. I look forward to spending my summer with her and bunch of new people as well. :)
E-Rock~
This boy right here is my best friend, my partner in crime, and is technically my step brother, but he's like my twin in my eyes. We're the same age and we do almost everything together. We hang out and tell each other everything and of course always have each other's back. Once we go to college I really don't know how I'm going to live without him. I miss him already and he texts me now that I'm away. I couldn't ask for a better brother.
I have over 1,000 followers on tumblr and 7 here.... take a look at my tumblr guys you'd probably get to know me better there anyway. http://y0uismadcute.tumblr.com
"Fifty Shades of Grey" The novel and movie
http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1688366/fifty-shades-grey-elevator-scene.jhtml
How do you feel about "Fifty Shades of Grey?" I know back in NY it's all the hype. Can you handle the raciness or do you think it's intensity is a bit much for our culture? I feel a book like this is something new and exciting and strays away from the stereotypical female romance novels. The movie has high expectations. How do you feel about this? Are you for it or against it?

Welcome!
Hey everyone. My name is Victoria-Rose, but you can all just call me Victoria since I know Victoria-Rose is a mouth full. I'm from the Bronx, NY and am 17 years old and entering my senior year. I go to a small performing arts high school in Manhattan called Talent Unlimited and I'm a Musical Theatre major. I'm not the girliest girl you'll meet, but I'm not a tomboy either. I'm different I guess or as everyone else in my family would refer to me as silly or awkward. I guess I can agree. I'm Puerto Rican an Ecuadorian, but everyone thinks I'm Asian, but I assure you, I'm not.
I'm currently staying at UCLA for a program called Summer Discovery to take college courses. I'm taking Psychology and Media in the 21st century. And that's where this blog comes to play. I will be blogging about my experience here in California and all the wonderful things UCLA has offered me, as well as, entertainment, which is my assignment theme. So let Victoria entertain you and let me show you how UCLA has entertained me and how I and my individuality entertains UCLA. Enjoy! :)
